AMA Pro Racing Adds Tucson on Oct. 6th

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (January 9, 2012) - AMA Pro Racing is excited to add USA Raceway in Tucson, Ariz. to the 2012 AMA Pro Racing Flat Track Schedule. The event will fill the October 6, 2012 TBA date on the previously-announced 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com schedule.

Arizona's premier 3/8-mile dirt track, USA Raceway is a relatively new track. The modern facility, which opened in 2005, normally hosts Late Model Stock Cars and Sprints Cars, but the AMA Pro Grand National Championship has visited Tucson before. In 2007, there were actually two Nationals in one weekend there.

The Raceway hosted both GNC Singles and GNC Twins rounds in what would be the last races of the year. Jake Johnson, aboard a factory-backed Suzuki, won the first night over teammate JR Schnabel and Bryan Smith on a Honda. The next night, Kenny Coolbeth locked up the number one plate with a second-place finish behind Joe Kopp, with Rich King taking third to make it an all Harley-Davidson podium.

The AMA Pro Flat Track Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com and the AMA Pro Flat Track Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles will conclude the 2012 season on the west coast, the October 6 date placing the Tucson, Ariz. event on the weekend between California races in Santa Rosa and the finale at Pomona.

Anaheim 1 After Thoughts....

After the Supercross Series Opener at Anaheim 1 ran this Saturday, this is what I would take from the race...

The riders didn't like the track, but that typically leads to good racing. Dirt Track example, Daytona. Most of us hate the track in Daytona, can tell you I don't know of anyone (outside of maybe Slammy) that like the shorttrack in Daytona but it has lead to really good racing in the past. As riders we usually don't like tracks where we struggle to find a set up and get into a good rythym. Not to mention as the night went on the track got rougher, had more ruts, and got slick. A stark contrast to the hard packed blue groove smooth as asphalt test tracks most of these guys have been testing on. That's probably why so many good guys hit the ground. Dean Wilson and Wil Hahn in the 250F's. Reed, Stewart, Dungey, Tedesco, Josh Grant, and T. Hahn in the 450's.

Stewart will come around, even after "Tire Gate" where he ran both a Bridgestone and a Dunlop tire during practice, so they had a baseline to compare against the Pirelli's. They admitted that the track was much different than what they had been testing on and they wanted to eliminate all variables. The next time they have a track that technical don't count #7 out...

Villopoto rode awesome, as expected. Dude is a robot. Reed put in a solid effort and despite a late race crash held on for 2nd. Dungey had a mid race bobble also but held on for 3rd, and in doing so gave KTM it's first supercross podium in the premier class. Justin Brayton was very surprising to finish 4th after coming from the LCQ. Jake Weimer was a big surprise to me also finishing 5th, and Stewart came home 6th. Outside of that, not a whole lot exciting, Tommy Hahn was turning really good turns but must have crashed and busted himself up good. Nick Wey didn't make the main. Which is a bummer. Josh Hill struggled to ride through his injury which is amazing, I'm hearing he'll miss Phoenix this weekend. Hope the kid heals up and comes back. Got serious damage in that left ankle/foot of his.

Cole Seely put a hurt on the 250F guys. Passing Wilson and Rattray of the Pro Circuit team and riding real solid for a great win for the TLD Honda Crew. Good for him. Wilson crashed on the last lap to give up 3rd spot to Tomac. Tomac rode awesome. Hammering a triple out of a corner that only Reed, Stewart, and Dungey were the other ones jumping. And doing it on a 250F.

Was surprised to see Jeff Ward Racing Kawasaki have both it's riders in the main, apparently no growing pains there as Josh Grant and Kyle Chisholm both had solid rides.

Also Andrew Short on the new L&Mc team sponsored by Supercross.com was solid and can't expect a team with those guys behind it to ever do bad. I was surprised to see them rocking FMF Exhausts, and it looks like a ton of people are rocking them this year.

Factory Kawasaki is back to Pro Circuit exhausts. Also rocking white rear fenders trying to copy Honda or something. Which I think is not cool. But hey they don't really care what I think do they. At least I don't think they do because they haven't expressed any interest in my feelings yet.

Matt at EmSee Custom Paint out of Springfield, Illinois has come on board for 2012. Matt paints for the Joe Gibbs Racing, Penske Racing, and Justin Algaier in the Nascar world. A Springfield native, and an ex motocrosser of 10 years turned into Paint Booth Junkie, All Around Race Fan, and helluva good guy. It should be coming up with some sweet paint jobs on the Bell Moto 9s and Bell Stars that I'll be wearing this year.

Keep an eye out as it will be here that the paint is introduced first...

Anaheim 1 This Weekend!

Anaheim 1 Supercross is this weekend and it will be live on Speedvision. No idea what time but I would guess the night show starts about 7pm PST and typically ends around 10pm PST. This event is always super hyped up and it ends what I call "Survival Season." Most notable victims of survival season: Ken Roczen, Trey Canard, PJ Larsen and I know there are others that I'm forgetting. As always, this is the time of year to catch the first glimpse of 2013 gear, the new bikes, new teams, new haulers, new team/rider relationships, and the whole shebang.

Things that stand out to me the most... right now...

Moto Concepts Racing - Not sure how I feel about these guys going all Team Nami (thanks Porter) and calling their bikes MCR 450's and MCR 250's because of the lack of support they get from the industry. By doing this, and making their bikes white instead of the OEM color. The teams riders are sacrificing the OEM contingency money put up by Suzuki and Honda (i'm guessing that their 250F guess will be on Honda's but could very well be white Suzukis). Although the freedom to ride what they like, and use what they like, with no pressure from a OEM is pretty cool. If it wasn't an all Alessi team in JT gear I would almost like them... Maybe next year.

Dodge/Hart and Huntingon/Sycuan Casino/Kawasaki/Loc Tite/We'reSponsoredByTheWorld - These guys have an awesome pit presence. Everything is branded and tagged with their logos and colors and looks real professional for as busy as it. Stark contrast to the usually very bland and simple Factory Honda set up. I think that the H&H Team along with the KTM team have the best pit set ups. But also these guys have alot of support from Pro Circuit using their Suspension and Motors and have very capable riders in Ivan Tedesco #9, Josh Hill #74, and Kyle Partridge #??, and Josh Hansen #100. The raw talent in that team is insane. Hill and Hansen are flashy and fast but hopefully Carey Hart and Kenny Watson can keep them in line and focusing on winning races and they have potential to be real upsetters. Tedesco isnt nearly as flashy but rock solid. Tedesco was strong last year even with knee/hip problems. Kyle Partridge is also on the team but I don't know shit about him. He's tall.

Nick Wey - NYK is back with Alan Brown of Brown Racing (XXX Fame) and made the choice to purchase his own 2012 Kawasaki KX 450's. Nyk is super talented but has been pinched in alot of deals in the past but he's a solid performer and in the action week and week out. Rarely injured I think only Kevin Windham has lined up for as many races as ole Nick. Plus i'm a Nyk fan cuz I grew up about 60 miles east of him. Keep an eye for the ole Michigan Mafia and the number two-seven from the big city of Dewitt come A1.

Two Two Racing - Will they do as good as they did last year? In the off season Chad went out and hired Mike Gosselaar and Sergio Avanto. Everybody knows Goose from success with RC. And i believe Sergio is an engineer that used to work for KYB suspensions back in the day for Kawasaki (think bubba on a 2 stroke)... I think. I could be wrong. Chad is now armed with full

factory Honda 450's so he can pick n choose n build a bike of what he think works best and I think for Chad this will work again this year as it did last year. Dude is happy and can do what he wants and that's coo.

Ryan Dungey / KTM - KTM announced today the 2012 KTM Factory SX-F 450 which is essentially a prototype 450 and they'll get around the rule by importing 50 of them and selling them at 10g a piece. It has a new frame and new body work (probably a preview of 2013). Cool to see KTM making such an effort. Hopefully it pays off for them. Hopefully Dungey finds a personality in the process...

James Stewart / JGR / Davi Millsaps - I think Stewart is going to be unreal. I think Millsaps will surprise and I think Pirelli will sell alot more tires after Stewart wins a few races on them despite that what he rides on and what we can buy are nothing alike. Not alot to say about these guys.

250F's - Well I don't know jack because nobody ever says what coast they're riding until the last minute so i'm going to throw out my favorites. Wil Hahn, Comeon mane! Dean Wilson, Dude is killer. Eli Tomac, turned into a monster at the end of the SX series last year. Justin Barcia, comeon he has a #1 plate! Daryn Durham, ever seen this kid ride? Got style for days! Malcom Stewart, he's the little bro of James, and he's hilarious. Enough for me! Kill it kid! All of the Troy Lee guys. Those guys are all cool on that team. Seely is the shit! and i think they have a #51 over there too. Hope that dude wins them all!

I'm baaacckkk! After going home for the Holiday's and being busy out of my mind with the Holidays, can get back here. Hope everybody had a good Christmas and New Year. It was good to see the family and load up with much needed supplies from my Parents.

I've been making my way through the Steve Jobs' book and what a dude that guy was. Like most 'geniuses' he bordered on the line of insane. And as well as everything went, I feel it could have went just as bad, just as easy. But one of the big points to me has been to chase your dreams, strive for perfection, be proud of what you do, and surround yourself with good people. Always easier said than done though right?

I also got a Go Pro camera, a little Flip HD cam, and a Keurig instant coffee maker. My sister really hooked me up. Pretty pumped with the cam's even though I'm late to the game, I've had some stuff I've wanted to do for a while, so hopefully we can bring you some good stuff from within the Waters Auto Body Racing Team this year. Well, if I get a new laptop as my trusty high mileage Sony Vaio has finally bit the dust. If you've traveled with me, you've no doubt seen the ole girl. Onto my netbook in the meantime and my HTC Evo which is practically a netbook in itself.

Speaking of the Waters Auto Body Team it looks like we have Arlen Ness leathers and Silkolene Oils on board for 2012. I've never worn Arlen Ness leathers, but they look good and I haven't ever heard anything bad about them, so that's promising. Jeremy sure does seem to like them. Silkolene Oils I have used in the past, and I know that Mike Boughner at Boughner Racing is real keen on their oils for suspension and that guys opinion is almost fact to me. So look for the big KTM Twin's to be rocking Silkolene Pro 4 Motor SX Synthetic oils, Brake Fluid, and Pro Chain Lube this season. And remember if you're cruising around the dealership to support those that help us. Works for everybody!

Bell Helmets for 2012

Just got word that Bell Powerspots, www.bellpowersports www.twitter.com/bellpowersports , is on board for 2012 with Waters Auto Body Racing and supplying their Moto 9 motocross helmet and Star Street Helmets for Jeremy and I to sport. I am really excited about this as I only wear helmets that I absolutely believe in. I grew up wearing Bells and after I tried a Moto 9 last year I bought one at retail because I liked the helmet so much. The magnetic cheek pads are super easy to remove, wash, and practically put themselves back in. The venting is excellent, and the tool-less visor has enough freeplay that it doesn't pull your head all around (remember i wear these things everywhere I can, Pomona 5/8 mile included). All these also help to make the helmet easy to take apart and clean thoroughly so your helmet doesn't smell like your buddies nasty ass hockey bag. And it comes with a sick helmet bag. Winning.

And sticking with my Moto helmet theme as I have for the past few years, keep an eye out for me in my now signature MX helmet on the half miles again in 2012. I really enjoy being able to see at the end of the night, and after having to pull off track at 2 cushion nationals is when I started wearing mx helmet and goggles, and haven't had a problem since.

Maybe I can con him out of a Variant or Sequence Mountain Bike helmet so I can look righteous and kickass while riding and shredding on my bicycles.

Well it's mostly done and I will be riding for Waters Auto Body in 2012 on their KTM LC8 motor 950/990 Twins. I'm pretty pumped. It's a good team and they seem to have the same general outlook I have. Work hard, race hard, have a beer and a burger after. Jeremy Higgins #82 will my teammate. I like Jeremy and his dad. Good group of people. Hopefully we can get the things working on the smaller more slick race tracks where they seem to struggle. But with as much horsepower and torque as the things have it's going to take some fine tuning. It should be good on the miles though! As long as we can keep a tire on the things!

Random thoughts today...

#1 Dark Horse for 2012 Supercross Season is.... wait for it... Tommy Hahn. Tommy is doing what I did a few years ago, and what Chad Reed did last year, and saying screw it, i'll do it on my own. He got some Honda's with the help of some Honda dealer in Texas and started making phone calls. From my sources he's going to have the same motors and suspensions as Kevin Windham. This should be good for him, dude rips when he's in a solid state of mind, but he seemed to suffer alot of crashes on the Moto Concepts Yamaha's in 2010. Which is what seems to be a problem with alot of them, they're unpredictable at those guys pace for 30 min +2... Just my thought, but watch out for the #12 of Tommy Hahn this season.

#2 I really want to do some mountain bike races this summer. Problems being trying to find free time to do them, the money for a new bike, some are gravity oriented, and over ambition. Seems all the ones I want to do are gnarly! Why do it half ass? Run my ass into the ground racing a bunch of dudes in much better shape than me? SIGN ME UP! But one that has really been interesting me is the Trans-Sylvania Epic in State College, Pa. http://www.tsepic.com/2012generalinfo#STAGES Also if I stay in Kansas City, Missouri I'd like to try to find a way to do some of the Midwest Fat Tire series, and build/find a place to build some sweet pump track/trails. Anybody in the area lemme know lets make it happen!

Back to moto...

The Alessi brothers and the rest of the Moto Concepts team are going to be wearing the new JT Gear, which I think is just awful. Especially the helmets which they're also wearing. I assume this means Mike lost his Red Bull money and the JT money was his second best option. But man, JT really went "full retard" with that helmet.... never go full retard, everybody know that...

In my other moto related opinions, Josh Hansen gets stomped. I actually like the guy, but I think he's going to do dismal. Pumped to see Josh Hill back on a bike. Looking forward to Reed's new gear and set up. I think Wey and Millsaps will both be regular top 10 guys, and also like I said earlier Tommy Hahn.

James Stewart could be real interesting on the JGR bike. But that's been talked to death on anyother website so look there, dude rips and he will still rip, when he's on two wheels it's obvious that he's the fastest rider out there so don't try to dispute that with me. I'm really interested to see how he'll do on a) Pirelli Tires and b) JGR suspension. JGR does alot of their suspension in house and I believe they make their own shocks with help from the cup side of the garage. Plus he'll be at the Outdoors if he doesn't wad himself up.

Watch out for Stewart cuz it seems like he's having fun on a bike again and only Carmicheal can race this guy head to head. I bet Stewart was bummed out to not have been winning these past few seasons and put a ton of pressure on himself and he too was getting burnt out. He gets back on a motorcycle, and starts having fun and nobody will touch him.

Anyways a month before Anaheim 1 and I'm standing by James Stewart as the champion. As long as he doesn't wad himself up in the process...

Survival Season

Survival Season is what I like to call the season between "Silly Season" and the actual race season. That gap between when you put the ink to your contract, and the first time you line up. Seems to always catch a ton of guys off guard with injuries and putting them out for who knows how much of the series.

The first culprit this year seems to be Trey Canard who has broken his collarbone. We're 4 weeks out from the first race on what should be a 6 week injury and it's possibly that they will plate it and screw it and he could make the gate two weeks early. This is a dude who has broken his femur twice in the last calender year so nothing is impossible.

It is however very unfortunate for a genuine good dude in the sport. I don't think there is anyone out there who can't root for the friendly Oklahoman. Hell I am not a fan of his biblical and religious references, but i don't realy care, dude can flat ride a motorcycle and thats what I dig. And he seems like a nice kid. I'm sure he'll be right back up front as soon as he comes back from this injury.

I like to do things out of the box sometimes, i don't really care how things work for you, if they don't work for me than i'm doing them a different way, my way. I am a hard head from the rust belt... So needless to say I have a rather unconventional way of doing things sometimes. Prime example I have no throttle control, so don't give me horsepower, not only will I spin around backwards and go slower than shit, I'll complain and then my mechanics and team owner will complain cuz there are no race results. Give me something I can hold wide open, if I can't hold it wide open, it's too fast for me... Slow it down.

I like to think I have a lot of ideas, a lot of good ideas, and some not so much. But I tend to lack follow through (mainly due to lack of talent). I have this problem that if i'm not an expert then I tend to kind of shy away. But I've come up with a lot of ideas I would like to implement regarding race teams, training, working, sponsorship, videos, blogs, twitter, web pages, small business ventures. I should probably follow through on more, ideas are a dime a dozen right? hell, everyone has those. Some I write down, some I forget, but being around the mountain bike industry lately opened my eyes to what you can achieve by having a dream and chasing it. But I'm sick of being blown off, ignored, and under appreciated. Time for changes.

This has happened with things in the past regarding employment, school, other people i've rode for, so in 07 I decided to put my money where my mouth was an do my own deal. We had a good deal in 07 and 08 and by far the best of my career, but I was lacking in places. I never had a full time mechanic (couldn't afford that in the budget) and lacked any sort of mechanical friends that were passionate for the sport and interested in helping me out. I had a fair amount of help if i begged and called the right people, but I always lacked the help at the race track that I thought would of taken me to a higher level. I love my dad, but he aint no Kenny Tolbert. I had Joe Bisha to help me for a few races, but eventually I got burned out.

I got sick of people always telling me they knew what was best for me, but never wanting to help. It's tough to run a race team. It's real tough to run a team on a very small budget by yourself. Say what you want but I was overwhelmed and lost my passion. in 2008 from May to October I was home for a combined 7 days. And even after my best year, I was getting bitched at constantly about something, going to the wrong races, not doing well enough, going racing by myself. That sucked and was the final straw.

After a year of being in the sport but simultaneously being as isolated from the sport as possible, my perspective changed, and growing up a little helped. I've never been a gym guy, I cannot work out in a gym and lift weights, I can however go ride my bicycle all day and have fun. All i've ever done is think about motorcycles, whether its Dirt Track, Motocross, Supercross, World Superbike, Moto GP. Hell all my friends race motorbucles and I can't get away from that, and I don't want to. Life can suck, but let me telling you working your tail off, no matter how hard, and getting to do what you love and enjoy to do, is way better than anything else.

Come 2012 and in 2-3 years it's been full circle. I want to go racing, I want to make use of these ideas. So I'm going to try and do some different stuff to be able to go racing, and not just rely on hand outs like some people, but to do the best job I can to work for whoever the hell wants to sponsor/employ my dumb ass.

Anyways I'll get to it later but one of the main reasons for firing up my blog again is because of my newfound desire to go racing again. I had gotten burnt out in 2008, Slowed down in 2009, and for 2010 and 2011 was all but over it. I went from Pomona (Oct 09) to Springfield (May, 10) without riding a motorcycle at all. One because as I said i was burnt out, and two because well I was too broke to own a motorcycle I could just ride. But although 2011 I wasn't motivated to ride alot, in the midst of lacking motivation, I found it again. I just had to get back to riding motorcycles for fun, and in the riding for fun I discovered bicycles again, although now I moved from bmx bikes to mountain bikes to the point I was commuting to work when it wasn't 100+ day just because I enjoyed riding either my mountain bike or my road bike.

I've got some things in the works for 2012 and I'm really excited to be back working on racing motorcycles and trying to give back whatever it is I may be able to give back. I'll let you in on those later, and more of what made me lose my drive to race motorcycles...

The next few posts will probably revolve around that, and then i'll move onto my randomness, hating reality tv, craft beer, what I think about other aspects of motorcycle racing, my love for mountain bikes, and whatever else is too long for my twitter account...
